Dr. Jay McNee, a founding member of Lorax, passed away at home surrounded by his
family
on December 3. Jay had been battling
cancer for the past 2 1/2 years, yet continued
to lead
projects and
deliver direction and insight to Lorax staff throughout this time.
Throughout his career, Jay was a strong supporter of post-secondary education. He
implicitly
understood the value of curiosity and experimentation in learning and the
importance of
intellectual rigour in technological and social application. He was a gentle
and encouraging
mentor who fostered in those around him a thirst for knowledge.
In recognition of those important values and Jay's contributions to science, his family and
friends
in conjunction with Lorax Environmental Services are establishing in his name an
endowed
memorial scholarship at the University of British Columbia. The John Jay McNee
Memorial
Scholarship in Geochemistry will provide an annual award to a third or fourth
year
meritorious student at the University who is studying--like Jay did--the geochemical
wonders
of our planet. |
